all the luck ! After a few negotiations (and few tall tales on DH's part),
the gentleman allows me to dig a start and we head back down the road! >>
Well, I too have a story about iris rustlers. Some of our members were on
their way to the Philharmonic.... dressed to the nines in tuxes and gowns.
When they spied a blue (siberian or whatever), growing along the side of the
road in a remote area. Well, they all obsessed on the plant through the
concert and decided to "rescue" it on the way home (don't we all have a boy
scout folding shovel in the trunk??).
So... as they make their way down the road in the dark, it began to drizzle,
but not wanting to abandon the holy quest, my friend Peter (the one in the
tux) was appointed to jump out, do the deed and they'd all go home.
Well, they pulled up, let Peter out... he dug the object of their desire...
and DIDN'T AN ACCIDENT occur right down the road! So, the ladies in the car
panicked and blew out of there..... Peter ducked in to the woods in his tux...
WITH the iris and his shovel.
It began to rain harder.
The car circled around and discovered that a bazillion police cars were now on
the scene... so they sped off again!
Peter spent quite a long time in the woods in the rain... until the accident
cleared... the police left and all was quiet again.
Finally hours later... a furtive pickup was made and the iris found a new
home.
You'd have to know the people involved to fully appreciate this story. It's
one of my favorites.
Kathy Guest... who was having dinner in the Roycroft at Christmas time with
Sweet Leonard when the self-same, iris rustlin' Peter came running through the
dining room with his violin... saw us and stopped to serenade with some
carols.
