Dear Zelma

We also use the good old discarded venetian blind to label our iris in
Australia. One point to remember. When you are inserting one end into the
soil as is sometimes the case, always write the initials or a few letters
at least of the name onto the part that is buried. If you are a bit like me
and fall behind in rewriting these jolly things and then find the name is
completely faded I find the clues buried safely out of the sun's rays.
Bill, long suffering husband of mine, has been making wire holders out of
discarded soft fencing wire. He takes a 30 inch length, and using a piece
of flat steel with two 1/2 inch bolts welded and leaving enough to push
into the ground he loops the wire around the bolts. So I then have two
loops that hold the cut length of venetian blind horizontally. I also round
off the cut edges to avoid the little cuts to hands when weeding nearby. I
have been told to buy cattle ear tag marking pens as the best marker pen
available to use.
