There does still seem to be a little bit of diversity of form among the
newer bearded iris, but not as much as it seems there is room for, given
the bounty of introductions.  I would certainly go for most forms, with
good substance and durable (longer lasting) individual blooms.  But I
think it takes a particular mentality for a hybridizer to have goals of
developing an iris type that is out of fashion or even worse to go after
an outdated appearance.  The public may love 'em, but the society that
evaluates them is not too likely to reward the effort.  I think the
comments on the list about genuine 'antiques' is probably a good
representation of how AIS judges would generally view new 'old fashioned
looking' irises.
