Anner, could you give some examples of tall bearded irises with
iridescence, pearl, and the velvet you are referring to? I don't know
many of the older irises, but it would be nice to know of several
examples of each that are still widely grown in case I ever see them at
a show or in a display garden. I tend to be fairly unobservant unless I
have something like this to hunt for. (like it taking me over a year to
figure out that most of my rot problems here were from frost or drought
damage). Are there any examples of popular moderns that have any
tendency at all in these directions?
DUSKY CHALLENGER's sheen certainly stands out. It would be interesting
to see if those petal qualities come mostly from variegata, pallida, or
mesopotamica 'bloodlines'.
