I think you've hit the nail on the head.  My brother is 3rd generation on one
plot-thank heavens he did bulldoze the house but another property in the
family they just let the house sit and cattle roam through it-boggles my mind.
I agree the diggers are tresspassing and at least they should ask permission.
I even felt guilty when a friend wanted to stop at an area-no buildings but
lovely lilacs-to cut lilacs and that was only pruning them which helped in the
