AIS: Awards, the Dykes Medal

Greetings,

There was some discussion a bit back about Wayside, I think, and about the
highest medal awarded by the AIS and I didn't speak because I did not have a
reference. I have one now, albeit one that is older. Notwithstanding that
fact, I believe the information is still valid. Please correct me if I err.

Here is the story: last autumn my local chapter rented the Iris Trivia slides
from AIS and did the quiz that comes with it and one of the questions that
caught me, although it makes perfect sense when you think about it, concerned
the highest TB medal awarded by the AIS. According to the answer sheet it
isn't the Dykes because the Dykes is actually awarded by the British Iris
Society upon our recommendation. Now, I haven't turned up this information in
World of Irises, but in its predecessor, Garden Irises, published by AIS in
1959, it says on p. 456:

" The highest award given to an iris is the Dykes Memorial medal. This may be
awarded annually by the British Iris Society to an English variety, a French
variety, and a North American variety.[...] In North American the Dykes Medal
is awarded for the British Iris Society by the Directors of the American Iris
Society."

So the Dykes is technically not an AIS award.
