How do you order?

Hi all:

I imagine lots of you are off participating in Friday Night Chat, but I
have questions I want to throw out for reaction & am in no hurry. 

What I'm curious about is: when you send away for an iris you haven't
grown before, do you order just one rhizome or bulb or do you order in
multiples? If the latter, how many do you typically order of each named
iris? (I'm not thinking of tiny rock garden irises here -- one of those
would not a statement make...)

Does the quantity you order depend strictly on price (especially if it's
steep per each), the *type* of iris it is (TB, JI, etc.) or what? If you
order in onesies, do you wait to see how it does in your garden & then
order additional rz or bulbs the next year or depend on increases to
build your "drifts"?

Obviously, I've had a lapful of catalogs lately, trying to figure out
how best to divvy up my iris dollars -- mortgaging the cat is not going
to help after all. I'd love to know how the rest of you solve the
dilemma of wanting lots of coloful diversity & yet also wanting enough
of each specific flower so that it doesn't always look like a
hodge-podge out there. Thanks for your comments!

Marte in the mtns	Zone 4/Sunset 1  Colorado -- we got 2 1/2' of snow at
my place 9 days ago but it's been so warm since that it's mostly melted
& a person can begin to think, seriously, of spring. Yahoo!
