I've had japonica severely damaged like this several times in the past
decade. They always seem to come back from their underground runners.
Your bloom for this year is gone, though. I've had one bloom stalk in 13
years from several big patches of japonica (both the plain-leaved and
variegated varieties). They do very well until those late freezes in
March...
The variegated japonica definitely has a tendency to mutate back to the
all-green form. I have to carefully select in order to preserve it,
because the green reversions are so vigorous.
