I also spent several hours at this today, Dennis. Unfortunately, the most
susceptible part of the iris is the center, bloom stalk fan. When it gets
hit, and rots to the rhizome--no bloom. Sometimes just the outside leaves
are lost--that fan may still bloom in some fashion.
It's important to scrape out all the soft area, and apply bleach, as you
did, (or powdered cleanser with chlorine) to stop the progress of the rot,
or the whole plant can be lost.
Quite a bit of damage here this year. Silly see-saw weather and no decent
snow cover.
