Hi gang. The local iris club had their first meeting of the year yesterday
and I thought I'd share one of the announcements with you. Earl Hall and
his wife are moving into a convalescent home where Earl can be cared for
properly. Consequently his son (I think they said it was his son) is moving
into the old house and converting the iris beds into a vegetable garden.
Earl's daughter had asked John Bruce (our club's fearless leader!) to
announce that she wants to try to sell as many irises as possible because
she can't bear to see them get tilled under and destroyed. So I thought I'd
go ahead and make an announcement to the list on John's behalf. :) And I'm
sure he can fill in some of the blanks that I've missed.
A few things that may be of concern. Some of the seedlings in Earl's beds
have lost their nametags. And all the irises will have to be dug and
shipped by the end of April, which as we all know is not the best time for
it. Nothing about prices was mentioned, but I'm sure you'll get more than
your money's worth considering the circumstances.
Since John recently visited the iris beds, perhaps he can give us a good
idea of what types & quantities of irises are available. For those of you
unfamiliar with Earl's work, two of his most popular irises are JEWEL BABY
and LITTLE SHOWOFF, both SDBs.
I know that most of you might not be interested, but certainly some of you
have known Earl for a long, long time and I thought it important to let you
know about this opportunity before it's too late and all those irises turned
into vegetable fertilizer!
If I had half a brain, I'd be able to find John's email address so you can
contact him about it. But I'm sure he'll read this and respond to the group
soon enough. :)
