I'm glad she has a long-term plan, but it's probably going to take several
parallel lines to produce the two types she eventually wants.
First, the veined pattern..... If I were doing this, I'd try to establish
a separate line for each of the three most-available regelia species, as
well as one based on the RCs.
1. The best veining comes from I. korolkowii. It's a diploid species,
sometimes listed in the ASI Plant Sale. Crossing it with diploid MTBs, she
might get something similar to OYEZ. Although diploid arilbreds have
limited fertility, they've proven useful in the Triploid Route.
2. I. stolonifera is a tetraploid species that also produces some
veining, as well as some interesting mixtures. Pleasure Iris Gardens lists
it this year.
3. I. hoogiana has a more rounded form than the other regelia species,
and accepts a signal when crossed with oncos. Tetraploid hoogianabreds
wouldn't meet her final goals, but should prove useful breeders toward that
end.
4. For the more rounded form with signals, the RCs will have to be
brought into the picture. Pleasure Gardens also lists two interesting ones
this year. DUNSHANBE has been counted tetraploid, and has given me a
number of arilbreds with intricate patterns. I don't think that PERSIAN
ACCENT has been counted, but it has given me enough seedlings when crossed
with tetraploids that I believe it most likely is one. Also watch for
BALLALAIKA MUSIC and WERCKMEISTER'S BEAUTY in the ASI Plant Sale.
This foundation stock could then be intercrossed or outcrossed to her MTBs
-- but I'd recommend maintaining the separate lines as breeders.
See the Sibling Sheets I've posted on my website for some of the offspring
of WERCKMEISTER'S BEAUTY. These are examples of the type of 3/4-breds I
suggested might be worth a try.
