Judy,
Since this is only my second spring here, I am not certain when
normal bloom time for Louisianas is. It appears to be late March or
early April. The ones blooming now [wild] are in the Rainbow River,
which is a constant 72 F all year. I am in a frost pocket, so things
are slower.
I do know that a 12 year old girl in Crystal River has gotten a
bloom on Iris hexagona to open today. Since the soil here drains fast,
I have to grow the Louisianas in sunken pots, kiddie pools, etc.
I have had some TB Irises to survive since coming here in fall
1997. Last month, I had one to bloom, but I cannot yet say they will
grow here. Performance has not been that grand.
Oddly enough, some Siberians are hanging on. If they do, I will
let you all know. Also, Iris virginica and Iris pseudacorus looks
fairly promising, but all three of these have to be treated like the
Louisianas.
Where in Florida is your friend located? If they have e-mail, they
may would like to join the Florida Gardening List.
