Hi folks,
Knowing that there are several members of this list who belong to
the Aril Society I am surprised that there has not been any reaction
to the paper by Adam Fisko in the ASI Yearbook on the use of
Aspirin to control Erwinia.
I hve now got some of the original research papers and the data
have me doing cartwheels (I wish!).
In a nutshell, it is suggested that salicylic acid acts as a signal to
plants which leads to the induction of a systemic acquired
resistance. This resistance appears to be effective against viral,
bacterial and fungal organisms.
At this stage the only experiments aside from those of Adam Fisko
have been done on plantlets in the lab. What is needed is some
good research under field conditions.
I am now transplanting lily seedlings and am splitting each lot into
an Aspirin and a control group. Of course it would be better to use
species or clones but that requires some planning ahead and will
have to wait untilmnext year. For a starting point I shall follow
Adam's SWAG protocol (scientific wild ass guess) and drench with
two tablets of 325 Aspirin per gallon of water.
Anybody else care to give this a try?
Cheers
John Montgomery in search of the magic bullet
