Hi, Lowell.
We here in the Zombie Zone have problems with rot, too. When we catch it in
time, we follow your procedures with the addition of either sprinkling the
wound liberally with Comet or drenching it with undiluted chlorine bleach. I
used to think the bleach needed to be diluted but one summer we had a bad
infection in a strip through one of our beds and I tried the undiluted as a
last resort. It stopped it and did not seem to affect the plants.

Sometimes though, we have to dig the affected rhizomes along with the soil
around them, treat those that are not too far gone, leave them in the sun for
a day or two, then replant in "clean" soil.

I am also intrigued with the aspirin idea. I wonder if this would discourage
the bacterial soft rot. Thoughts, anyone?
