Donald,

There are lots of factors that affect frost sensitivity, such as stage of
development of the buds and stalks, duration of the low temperatures, etc.,
but from my experience I would not consider 27 degrees too terribly
threatening - it seems the real damage has occurred here when the
temperature drops to the range of 22 or 20 or below after the stalks have
begun to grow. Also, if it is going to be windy, wouldn't that mitigate any
danger of frost damage? Isn't that why citrus growers put those big fans in
their groves on cold nights? My conclusion has been that I have caused more
harm than good trying to provide emergency frost protection to my irises
after the stalks have begun to emerge.
