AIS being 'the tall bearded iris society' is borne out in the AIS
position statement on page 78 of the July 1998 AIS Bulletin:
....' the largest single interest of the broad membership of the AIS
is the tall bearded iris category ( always was, always will be)'...
And, on page 11 of that same bulletin, the editor writes:
'While each of the sections has its own Symposiums, Conventions,
display gardens, educational and promotional newsletters, the AIS
performs those functions for the tall bearded irises; these
activities are reported annually in the Bulletin and priority is
given to topics related to tall bearded irises.'
It is easy to see how the AIS became known as 'the Tall Bearded Iris
Society' long before those words (above) were written in 1998.
