Oh, really, Walta! So which ones are you excited about these days? And what
about them has gotten you into this delightful condition? You going to do
crosses?
Species irises are a passion of mine as well. I love growing them from seeds.
I have mostly beardless, with some spuria species in addition to really
obvious stuff. I'd like to try some junos at some point but I don't think this
is the garden for them. It certainly isn't the garden for bulbous species and
I can't keep the 40 chromosome siberians alive more than about two years, even
when home grown from seed. As I recall Clarence said he had the same problem.
I'm sure we are not the only ones.
I've been drifting toward growing only the white forms of several things. I'm
always excited about white tectorums. Dr. Z thinks they are among the
loveliest of irises and they must be among the easiest plants in the world to
do from seeds. And I've got a sweet white tridentata a friend gave me that I'm
excited about. My white seed-grown prismatica should bloom this year. Most of
the white setosas I've gotten from seed have been pretty banal but I intend to
keep working on this since I think setosas in all sizes and colors have a lot
going for them as garden plants. And you could say that of a lot of species,
and the newer species crosses.
