Re: JUDGING AND ETHICS

From: "Carryl M. Meyer" <carrylm@bigsky.net>

Have any of you ever looked at the size of Region 11? Really big--with the
Judges mostly in Montana, and many students and Apprentices in Boise, Idaho
area. Not many other judges live very close to anywhere in our region--our
judges have to be familiar with all Iris--bearded and non-bearded--we have
one show here--and we have entries of most classes of medians, Arilbreds,
Siberian, Specie--and several Historics--so our society invites a judge
from another region to come to our show and help with the 'Best of Show'
selections--otherwise, a judge here had better well know all varieties--
Our Society has a rather large Iris Garden and one reason for maintaining
a variety of Iris growing there, is that if a Judge does not care to raise
all varieties, he/she can still see them growing at our club garden and
thus be familiar with all varieties which grow in our area
.as to whether a historic can win 'Best of Show'--yes, but the handbook
does have a statement that--"When two specimens are judged equal in all
respects except for the date of introduction, the newer varietyshould be
placed higher, because it shows the public what is considered to be a good
iris of today." (p206) But certainly if the historic point scores higher
than a newer one, it should be given the higher award.
When a member accepts the position of Show Chairman, he/she then appoints a
Show Judge--who does the judging assignments and confers with the JT Chair
if needed, as to the qualifications of each Judge--I always just sorta
figured that it was the same in all regions-- Twould be nice to be able to
grow Louisianas and Japanese--
Carryl in western Montana--where we went from 63 yesterdayto 29 and a
white-out this morning--Winter is s'posed to be done and gone!!!!!!!
