St.Paddy's Day iris...

From: "Chris Hollinshead" <cris@netcom.ca>

In honor of St.Paddy's Day here is a list of the some of greenest of the
green iris culled from past discussions. If anyone has got any more to
add... go right ahead!

Green is the order of the day!

May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.

In the oldy but goody category is the SDB GREEN SPOT with ... a green spot!
Still a neat little iris. A newer SDB is KIWI SLICES with lots of
greenness... grows wonderfully well here too. Have had the TB LIME FIZZ at
the front of the house for two years now but it seems more on the yellow
than green side.

I saw MORE REFRESHING (Hoage, 82) in bloom at the Chapman Garden during the
Denver Convention this spring and thought it was about the "greenest" TB I
had ever seen.

I have grown many so called "green" iris and the greenest one I have
ever seen is EVERGREEN HIDEAWAY. I sometimes ask visitors to my garden,
who are not Jaded by iris colors to "tell me the color" of E H. They
all say Chartreuse. So I guess thats pretty close to green. The only
fault with E H is that it is somewhat short for me. I grew GREEN PROPHECY
for a number of years and it is not close to E H. Another that
had a chartreuse cast this cool El Nino spring was PRIDE OF IRELAND.

GREEN AND GIFTED is a blend of gray and green with a brown beard. It
can look quite impressive on a cool day.

I grew EVERGREEN HIDEAWAY for several years, and what I saw makes me
concur with Rick Tasco: it was the greenest I've seen so far. However,
it always seemed to me to be a very muddy green, not very attractive to
my way of thinking. While it did tend to be short (and also rather
bunchy, I'd add) as Rick noted, it also was also very floriferous. I
have counted as many as 12 buds per stalk, and that not just in a single
year. So it has some virtues, too.

I have a few irises that are green. PRIDE OF IRELAND is kind of greenish
yellow. I have some unknown that has chartreuse standards and a reddish
blush
on chartreuse falls: it's a bit greener, some years more than others. And
I
have CHIMERA which is the greenest I grow. It's just about the color of
lime
sherbet with a purple blush in the center of the falls. (And it's from
Lloyd
Z. in '61.) It rebloomed for me this summer. Bruce Filardi (from iris-l)
is
into green irises too. I bet he has a good list, but I can't remember if he
has switched to iris-talk or not.

That's it! Now add one!
