In doing the leaf sanitation run over my beds I found two with a rot in the
mother rhizome, about where the bloom stalk would have been, but not
extending into the new fans, which I Baumunked with a spoon and Chlorox.
There was one other that was just a pulpy mass in the soil, which I
removed, adjoining soil and all, with a trowel. Out of approximately 1,000
rhizomes, and less than 100 miles from Linda Mann, I'd say I did right
well, although Linda says April is the cruelest month. Hmmm! Wonder if T.S.
Eliot raised iris?
One thing I did this year was to put a couple inches of wood chip mulch on
almost all my beds. I had some second thoughts, and have been out as early
as weather would allow to get the rhizomes exposed, but the treatable rot
rhizomes were pretty much on top of the mulch, whereas the soft rot
deceasement was in an unmulched bed. Not enough data to draw any
conclusions on yet, but in doing the weeding, I am all in favor of mulching!
