It's a matter of how stressed the plant is and what 'coping' skills it
has - some are so distressed by the damage that they are more
susceptible to other problems, like soft rot, bugs etc.  Others are able
to grow out of it.  Problem is, if it was susceptible this year, it may
be susceptible next year & this may be a losing battle.  Or not...

Same situation here - Knoxville is the biggest city near here - 50 miles
north and often 5 or 10oF warmer in those clear sky sudden dips.  One
good thing about concrete is that it stores a lot of heat.  Maybe I
should pave my garden...
