Carryl, have you tried using course river sand for mulch? Keith Keppel put
me onto this idea several years ago...it seems to hold down rot of most
kinds, and mice certainly do not like it! In addition to being nice and
clean, it is heavy and holds newly set rhizomes down better than anything
else I've ever tried. I keep a big pile of it handy. For several years I
noticed that some of my rhizomes (usually the biggest ones) would turn
orange over the winter. These same rhizomes also seemed to die a lot. I
have not had problems with that particular problem since I began mulching
any exposed rhizome with sand over the winter.
