I use the Eon garden markers. Started with the 6" mini marker and switched
to the taller 10" E-10, which also comes in 15 and 20 inch versions. The
E-10 was about $104 for 500. You can write on them with pencil, but I got a
black indelible garden marker from a nursery last summer which makes it far
more legible, and it weathered through the winter better than pencil, which
tends to react with the zinc, turning your scribblings to white on gray.
The University of Tennessee botanical garden uses the E-10 with clear
plastic labels printed on a laser printer, which are not terribly visible,
but a white paper label laid on first would certainly improve visibility.
They all heave out of the ground. Just move them slightly when putting back
in, as the next frost will pop them out again if you just set them upright.
I've had no cat problems, as my cat is a purrfect gentleman in this regard,
although once in awhile he likes to roll in the freshly tended soil and
mashes a fan. Tradeoffs!
