Adding to the discussion about FREEZE ROT--we certainly have it here!!!
When the snow meltsin the Spring, and I check my plants, sometimes I find
that all there is is a pile of sorta dark brown powder, and the outer shell
of the rhizome--over the winter it has dried and rotted--more often than
not--on a new rhizome whichwas planted the prior summer
This is very different rot than the slimy, yucky, smelly stuff that appears
usually later in the year-- and can usually be controlled by scraping and
bleaching.
I no longer trim the iris leaves off in the fall, just leave them be there
during the winter- under the snow-this seems to keep the 'dry rot' from
happening--as I had more 'dry rot' when I trimmed the leaves in the fall
than when I do not trim them--
Does not sound logical--but it happens--
I received 10 Spuria from Charlie Brown last late fall-and because I
thought that it was too late to put them in directly, I potted them in 4"
pots and sank the pots about 2/3 depth in the ground for the winter--only
protection was that they were between a row of medium size rocks and a
large dirt pile--to keep them protected from the wind--now there are 7
looking great--one more might make it--so only lost two--and the mice did
not find them!!
Better than the year I put the rhizomes directly in the ground and covered
them with straw--which the mice loved!!!! Snow cover here was spotty, with
several freeze-thaw-snow-freeze cycles this winter ( so I am told--Twas in
California fog then) many of the labels were heaved up out of the ground--
and cats had played with them so thank heavens for maps!!
QUESTION-- Has anyone tried the labels like the ones in Denver--made on a
'Brother' machine??? How did they survivethe winter??? Any suggestions for
labels which are:
Readable when standing in front of the rhizome and not having to bend
over--
Big enough to write name, Hybridizer name, variety, date of intro--
Will last through the summer sun and be readable the next year--
Will not peel off the metal tags during the winter--
If so, please let me know--my husband is in charge of our society
garden--at least 500 different cultivars there--and the thought of having
to do labels again this year is not a pleasant one--
Thanks Carryl in western Montana--maybe spring has sprung--suddenly the
birdsare back again!!!
