Re: Book reviews?

Dear Pat in Dallas,

The books you listed are quite different from each other. I have the first
four and find Brian Mathews' The Iris to be a very good reference for iris
species. Iris by Fritz Kohlein is also a species reference with quite a few
nice color photographs, but he has put some controversial names on some
species. Iris of China describes iris collecting in some remote areas of
China by James Waddick and Zhao Yu-tang. It has just a few color photos and
very nice line drawings. Currier McEwen has had a lot to do with popularizing
Japanese and Siberian irises. His books on these two types of irises are well
done and readable with good color photos.

The prices seem reasonable if they include postage. Some are a little high
otherwise. For a general coverage of growing irises in the home garden, get
Bill Shear's The Gardener's Iris Book. I just received it from the AIS
Storefront for $17.00 postpaid. I haven't read it all, but it seems to have a
lot of common sense ideas for getting the best out of your irises. Another
recent acquisition was Magic of Irises by Barbara Perry Lawton. It has a
little bit about a lot of kinds of irises and a lot of color pictures. It was
published by Fulcrum Printing in Golden, Colorado. That makes sense since
they were selling it at the AIS convention in Denver last year. The price on
the cover is $39.95, but I think I paid $25.00 special convention price.

Hope this helps a little.
