BOTRYTIS
(with profound apologies to Edgar Allen Poe)
As the winter snows receded, I with eager tread proceeded
To my iris garden fair;
Though it was still damp and chilly, I did not think that it was silly
To seek signs of springtime there.
Suddenly my joy departed, as swiftly I became downhearted
By a sight that left me cold -
Half my beauties fast decaying, rotten rhizomes all displaying
Telltale signs of dread gray mold.
'Twas Botrytis so relentless, even though his rot be scentless
That destroyed them by the score.
Now my tender care and grooming, all in hopes to see them blooming
Shall be rewarded Nevermore!
