In regard to Caryl and Cindy's reference to Keith Keppel's use of sand --
and her using "river sand" --- I have been using sand for 25 or more years
to put on top of my rhizomes when I put my irises to bed for the winter
---that is on the ones planted that summer. It does help to keep them from
rising up like a bunch of crabs on stilts -- - I just go to the quarry and
get the coarse builders sand - not the sandbox variety -- I take (also a
helper) a shovel, = old fertilizer or peat mulch etc bags and fill them and
the station wagon as much as I think it will stand = pay $3.00 and try to get
out alive with all the huge trucks going back and forth . This also gives me
sand for steps and sidewalk and to carry in the car for icy weather - of
course kittylitter will work for that Rosalie nr Balimore zone 7 where 70
degrees the last 2 days has melted the snow and oeft a soggy mess and I dont
want Spring yet - those taxes still to be done! ryfigge@aol.com.
