Looking forward to it myself, darling girl. Been laid up with a sprained ankle
for a couple of months, but I got out a bit these last few days, hobble hobble
waddle waddle. Not much lyrical happening at Chateau Whitehall quite yet,
although we are poised for miracles. The buds are swelling on the little
cherry tree and the white bleedinghearts are emerging. The madonna lilies are
a foot tall. Lilies of the valley just breaking the surface of the soil, which
means they will be in bloom in 21 days. Fiddleheads and toadlilies peeking out
of the natural mulch formed by last year's leaves from the crepe myrtle. Seed
pots on snowdrops starting to ripen. Oh, if I had more dirt I'd plant a
thousand of them. New growth on the tall white phlox and the japanese
anemones, than which few plants are more beautiful. My little roses are
breaking dormancy and the golden noisette rose I stole a slip of in a
graveyard in Charleston and brough home in a bottle of Perrier rooted. First
blooms on the epimediums, the sulphur one. The bletillas got hit mightly hard
by the last cold and I may have lost the variegated one, but I hope not. Most
of the irises are showing active growth now with the exception of a couple of
antique variegatas. Lost a couple of bearded rhizomes to winter. Often one of
three planted together of the same variety, reset after dividing. Curious. The
cats are being vile, especially Henry's immense new tabby with white bib and
feet, Dr. Malinowski. I shall have to pitch around a few mothballs to deter
them. Need to pitch around a bit of grass seed on the bald spots, too. I was
supposed to buy that last weekend but I got distracted by some high-end
hellebores at a garden fair and forgot. Lots of bugs are about and the slugs
are active again. Efforts to persuade Dr. M that they are delicious are
failing.
