James, when we moved here 5 years ago, a landscaping contractor mulched my
bearded iris with almost 2 feet of woodchips! I was so busy trying to save
other beds, I just wrote the mulched bed off, grumbling at the ignorant
contractor. Lo and behold, the next spring, most of the stuff in the new
bed rotted badly. In MAY I finally thought to uncover the bed mulched 2
feet deep, just to till it up. All iris in it were in excellent shape with
no rot!!
