I don't know about
mulching with the wood chips. A friend in this area did that one year to a
large bed, and virtually every one of the several dozen clumps developed rot or
suffered from some other problems the following spring/summer. Maybe it
would be different for your area, but I know I'd never do it. They hold
too much moisture around the rhizomes, don't let the air in to dry things
out.
