Linda, the wood chips were completely removed from the rhizomes before
summer set in. I don't use wood chips myself, the landscaper does! I like
sand much better. It offers the same protection as wood chips with less
chance for side effects. I just thought it was worth mentioning, because I
grumbled about the "stupid" landscaper all winter and even told him he'd
surely killed the irises. He said he always mulched them that heavily and
never lost any. Then, I lost mine planted the conventional way and the
ones he mulched for me were perfect! (There were about 50 iris in his
bed.)
