Vinve, I loved your description of you toiling in child-labor-camp! Reminds
me when weeding tuime came, how I disappeared to a friend's house. But how i
would like to be able to get downon my knees now and weed! But about wood
mulch. I first heard about it when one of my daughters was stationed in R.I.
(of course it was her navy husband who was stationed) and she mulched her
irises - to my horror! (she and her children were very active in Region 1's
activities) We were told here in Maryland that that was the biggest no-no.
But, after all, the climates are very different and it worked for her, so
against all advice from the matriarch of our group, I mulched BETWEEN the
irises. I thought it was a high-powered idea of keeping down the weeds -- and
keeping in scarce moister.. Well - over the years, many in the area were
doing the same thing! And I still do - I try to keep it OFF the bearded. but
I pile it on, on top of oak leaves for the beardless.. In addition, I have
under the mulch soaker hoses especially for the rebloomers and beardless. I
think it could help with leafspot- no splashing up of dirt in the rain and it
looks neater - sort of "frames" the iris. Rosalie nr Baltimore zone 7
