CULT: Wood Chip Mulch

From: Judyhunt1@aol.com

Perhaps one difference in whether said mulch is a delight or a disaster is
whether or not it has been aged for a time before it is applied to flower
beds. Last summer we put a one to two inch layer of chips from aged wood on a
perennial border, including some iris (that we only mulched around, not over
the rhizomes); we also mulched a daylily/daffodil bed with same. Some of the
wood was cedar that, of course, will not decompose as fast as the hardwood
chips. So far, everything looks great. We are planning to try this on one of
our "all iris" beds this year, but will only mulch to within about an inch of
the fans with the chips. We will probably use very course sand around the
rhizomes with the hope that this will help eliminate soil splash on the fans
and keep down leaf spot.
