V. sez:
One of the most unhappy memories from my childhood involves
woodchip mulch. The town was trimming the trees along the powerlines,
and my dad had them dump a whole truckload of woodchips in the yard.
Us small chilren were then inducted into the labor camp, forced to
drag buckets of woodchips to mulch all the irises. Some time later, we
had to DEMULCH all the irises, as they were starting to rot!!!
I'll bet that the pile of woodchips is still there.
This was in central Connecticut. We did not water the irises.
I did see a garden that used root dressing as mulch, and the irises
seemed happy. The soil there was shale, so maybe it works if you have
soil that drains really well.
