Re: CULT: wood chip mulch

James, Japanese iris come up very late here for me. The first year I
grew them, I was convinced they were all dead. They were! I mail
ordered them from general nursery sources, and despite replacements sent
over two years time, they never grew. This is because they were shipped
dry. At a late show in St. Louis 2 years ago, we were admiring the
Japanese and moaning that we couldn't grow them, though we had tried.
Jim Loveland asked where we got them and what condition they arrived
in. He explained they never had a chance because they were dry as
powder. He gave my daughter a wonderful starter collection from his
garden (he insisted !) and they have all survived and done well. The
first spring I looked and looked for green and even dug down several
inches looking for them. They just weren't ready to get up yet, but
they did all grow, and Stephanie received a Youth Queen of Show with a
stalk of WHITE FLAG (since renamed) which she learned how to blow on and
open from Jim Morris. So, hang in there and don't give up too early, or
Jim Loveland will send you a note!
