SPKR: Species lecture

From: Mike Lowe <mlowe@worldiris.com>

Bill Shear did a talk yesterday, accompanied by slides, on 'Extending the
Bloom Season with Iris Species.' The Central Virginia Iris Society hosted
the meeting and their refreshments did not help my roll of winter fat, at
all! The Region 4 RVP Sara Marley with husband Walter, did the 3 hour drive
from Northern Virginia and the adjoining Fredericksburg club had 5 members
attending. A good showing for Bill's excellent talk.

Over a number of years, my attendance at species lectures has often led to
mind numbing, eye glazing, posterior deadening experiences. I have come to
equate 'species' in a lecture title with presentations that rank right up
there with watching paint dry.

Not this one!

Bill did one of the most interesting, informative, iris lectures that I
have ever attended. He furnished us with a top drawer 'read' in 'The
Gardener's Iris Book.' Often a virtuoso in the print medium proves to be a
bust when confronted with an audience. Bill is as gifted doing a 'Dog and
Pony' show as he has proven to be as an author.

If you have an opportunity, you won't go wrong sitting in on one of his
lectures.

Cheers,
