Spring Fertilizing

From: Thomas Gormley <TGORMLEY@compuserve.com>

In Kevin Gormley's notes from Lu Danielson, spring fertilizing of arils
should be six "6"
)weeks before the iris show" giving the difference in climate the deciding
factor.

Kevin follows Lu's formula and timing suggestions to the letter and (much
to my irritation) her suggestion that new plantings NOT be allowed to bloom
the first year as the rhizome will be sturdier the next year. When we were
a guest garden for Region 18, Kevin (then age 15) went out and cut EVERY
beginning stalk on all the newest and latest guests, so they would be great
for the next year - and they were but I didn't get to see them until year
two. Now we have so many, that he doesn't make such an issue out of it,
and I get to see most first year guys bloom.
