Hi Karen:
Sorry, I can't limit it to two. These are all varieties that I remember off
the top of my head that I have grown for more than three years where three
years ago we had one freeze-thaw, two years ago we had three freeze-thaws
and last year we had the ice storm and then high winds throughout the
spring. Most years, like the current one, we have lots of snow cover and
don't suffer from freeze-thaws.
Best TBs for me:
Superstition -- older black but still wins ribbons, does reasonable well in
high winds and freeze-thaws
War Chief -- the best red in my books; it was the last one to bend from the
high winds last year and took absolutely no damage in the freeze-thaws we
experience two years ago
Immortality -- takes a while to get established but then leave it alone for
longer than you would other TBs; it with perform with abundance
Peach Picotee -- apricot band on standards and rosy band on falls and
ruffled; bloomed with two stalks first year and has bloomed well no matter
the weather
Patina -- old brown and yellow plicata; makes a wonderful clump and blooms
well every year
BBs
Sonja's Selah -- this is a Dykes contender in my books. Apricot amoena that
is to die for.
Music Box Dancer -- violet with red beards; consistent but slower grower.
IBs
Rare Edition -- raspberry plicata; makes fabulous clumps
Honey Glazed -- honey-caramel amoena; survives borer attacks very well
SDBs
Gingerbread Man -- an oldie but nothing newer beats it in its class; golden
brown with blue beards
Tu Tu Turquoise -- fabulous colour -- light blue with turquoise spot
Siberians
Peg Edwards -- light blue
Four Fold White -- white with yellow signal
And then there are the species
I. versicolor
I. pseudacorus
I. tectorum
I'm sure that if you asked me again in two months, it would be a slightly
different list and probably even longer.
