Hello,
my name is Amy, and I live in southern VA. I am new to gardening
altogether, and am very interested in growing irises. I am also new to
this one-list thing, as it was just recomended to me. Here is my
situuation:
A friend of mine has thousands of iris plants left by the former owner
of the house. The plants have not been divided in at least ten years, if
ever. The two of us have dug up least a half a dozen garbage bags full
so far, and we are not even half-way through. Some of the root (bulb?)
systems were over a foot long. How do we divide these, and how often to
they need done in the future? I have three bags of these plants on my
porch that I am assuming need something done with them fairly quickly. I
would appreciate any advice I can get. How should I plant the bulbs I
have? The area I want them in has nice well draining soil, and full sun.
Thanks.
Amy (zone 7 southern VA)
