Cadilac Valley

From: Gordon & Loraine Nicholson <iris4u@pacbell.net>

Central California which is where our garden and many others are located
was and is referred to as "Cadillac Valley", a term used by a major tv
network that did a special on our San Joaquin Valley, I believe it is
the largest valley (surrounded by mountains I think) in US. The term is
used not because we all drive Cadillacs, but because we have an
elaborate watering system in place, dams, etc: We could not farm if we
had to depend on the rain gauge. In our area the irrigations ditches
start filling on March 15 and they stop filling them (from resevoirs
located all over in the mountains) October 15 each year. There is
always an ongoing battle between nothern and southern California on who
gets whose water. There are times that we get penalized because a BIG
amount of our water goes to the LA area and leaves us short, or they
empty the resevoirs in anticipation of large amounts of rain water and
we have a dry winter (last period lasted 7 years). All of this effects
those who us who do any kind of farming, it also effects the home owner
who depends on surface water for drinking and yard care. So lets hear it
for those drought tolerant iris!!! lorraine in central California
waiting for the bloom stalks to appear at Woodland Iris Gardens.
