I use the Brothers' P-touch label machine. I thought I would be creative and use the different tapes that are available from Brothers. Yellow for Standard Dwarf Iris and Miniature dwarf iris, Blue for Border Bearded Iris, Red for Intermediate Bearded Iris, Green for Spurias and Siberian Iris, Black for Japanese Iris and White for all Tall Bearded Iris.
The black lettering last for at least 5 to 6 years, The metal stakes themselves do not outlast the labels. My experiment with the different colors somewhat worked. The yellow labels will fade in 1 to 2 years to an off white. The red turns to a light pink red, the blue holds most of its color, the green and black is probably the most stable of the colored labels. The white labels always hold their own and show no signs of fading.
I would like to know more about the metal stakes that do not rust.
Thanks,
Randy

I must jump in and put my 2 cents worth. I have been using the Brother
labeling machine since it was started. I have gone through 4 different
machines, upgrading to larger label tape and fonts. I now have a P-touch that
handles 1 inch tape and can put the varitiy on one line and the hybridizer
year and type on the second. the labels in the gardent under Texas sun do not
fade and have been there since 1992. I do use the EON Zinc marker and the
acid soil I have eats the galvanized legs, so the legs have to be replaced
about every 4 years or just break them off at ground level and have a shorter
marker. Charlie Brown, zone 7 1/2 4 miles from Oklahoma.
