CULT: Scorch

To those friends who are suffering from this malady I offer this bit of
information. I came across this recently and present it for what it's
worth.

"Scorch" by L. W. Brummitt
Scorch used to be a troublesome disease, picking on an iris clump
here and there in the garden, and, it was supposed, killing the plant.
So many growers still consider this disease to be fatal that details
of the very simple and infallible cure may not be out of place.
Usually it is a large plant which suffers from the disease, though I
have occasionally had the same trouble with seedlings. In either case
they can be cured by lifting the plant, cutting off any top growth, as
well as the dead roots and then burying it about 6 inches deep, treading
down firmly and, of course marking the spot with a cane.
I discovered this cure some years ago and have saved many valuable
plants without a single failure. Friends to whom I recommend this cure
have also reported 100 percent success.
Following this treatment, if the old plant was large, there will
appear above the ground a crop of small growths resembling seedlings
which, without disturbance, will require one more year to for normal
independent rhizomes at ground level.
The thought occurs to me that this treatment may prove equally
effective for those seedlings which flower without making any growths.
If the seedling is good it would be worth while to try.

I have never experienced scorch in my gardens so I can't say for
certain that this procedure works, but as Mr. Brummitt said it is worth
the try and who knows........?
