Dear Sharon, I assume you are a member of AIS since you are on email, so
look in the last (April) BULLETIN on page 124 which is the beginning of the
AIS Storefront. I f you are really "going into" irises, I suggest the "World
of IRises" of some 500 plus pages ($27.00) and there is a newly published
"Basic Iris Culture" which is very fundamental ($1.50) and is good to start
with. You are in Region 4 and I THINK new members automatically receive this
as members in our Region. But I also heartily recommend Bill Shear's "The
Gardeners Iris Book" which is sold to members at the very special price of
$17.00 (elsewhere $25.00, I think) As you get deeper into irises, you'll
find you can't do without the R & I (Registrtion & Introduction) which gives
you the answers to the questions you've asked. If you are more adept and
have more patience for that sort of thing than I would, you can also find
this out on the internet - but someone else can tell you how to do this - I
prefer the printed page! The R & I are published yearly between decades,
there will be a new one for the 90s - soon I hope - that will have irises
registered and introduced since the last volume -1989 -for the past 10 years.
I'm so happy to welcome someone new (at least on what I call "the monster")
in our region 4!! Do you belong to a chapter/society in your area? There
are a number in N.C. -- and the region just had its Spring meeting in Norfolk
- I'm sorry you missed it. We always have fun and learn a lot. Roy Epperson
gave 3 judges training classes that always keeps me awake, so you know they
were out-standing - and done in a professional manner - otherwise I'm
likely to nap! We had a day of garden tours - read Glenn Crump's report on
email he gave a few days ago and you will make every effort to attend the
next one! Region 4 people are very special and cordial - IMHO!!
Now to get back to Fayetteville - I thought that was near Asheville (which is
certainly not coastal) - I went to Camp Junaluska so many years ago, I may
have misplaced the town that was nearby! To make it easier to put you in
address files, could you give your last name and zone -- if you notice other
emails, that is what is usually done. Again, welcome. Rosalie nr Baltimore,
USA zone 7 (sometimes I think we're flirting with 6) ryfigge@aol.com
