After an absence of almost a year I had thought one thing that would be
different this year would be all talk of frost damage after the mild
winter we've had.
Sorry to tell you this, Linda, but this is the most spectacular bloom
season I've ever seen. We've had near normal precip since the first of
the year, about 12.88", only one very light front since TB buds began to
form and it is glorious out there!
There are no signs of rhizome rot. Fungal leaf spotting is the same
problem. I began using Daconil for the first time this year, but will
have to start much earlier next year. Be sure not to spray it on flowers
in bloom, as it zaps the blooms dead!
I have gained some hope of weed control thanks to Treflan pre-emergent
herbicide in granular form, and the bloom show going up the hillside is
bringing visitors every afternoon of the week, while I'm trying to do my
newspaper work.
For everybody north of here, take time to smell the flowers. This may be
the only good thing about global warming, so enjoy it while it lasts.
Each morning I take my coffee, toothpicks and dixie cups out to make
crosses and just end up walking around reveling in the glory of the
15-20 new variety blooms that have appeared during the night.
Now I know how Mike Sutton feels with his perfect California climate.
For anyone coming through East Tennessee, I am open Friday-Saturday and
Sunday the next two weekends, and weekends following for as long as it
lasts. Follow the signs from the only red light in Jonesborough, and
stop in with a real southern greeting like, "Hey, you doin' all right?"
