I routinely cover all my rhizomes with soil or sand now.  Some of them
do NOT respond well to that (they rot), but I am convinced that it
provides some protection (at least to the rhizome) from late freezes,
partly by slowing down early growth.  

I don't USUALLY bury them 6 inches deep!  Maybe an inch or two.  My soil
is excessively well drained (deep, gravelly loam) - not sure how well
this would work with heavy clay - not well I suspect.
