In my experience, many of them will live, unless they get the same
treatment next winter/spring. I have a small nubbin of ARRANGER'S
CHOICE that gets freeze damaged, drought damaged, followed by massive
'scorch' reaction, but keeps putting on a lot of growth between hits. I
doubt it will ever get big enough to bloom, but..
It isn't good for the plant to suffer this way though - and some don't
recover from such massive injury when they are putting on peak growth.
The 'vigorous' growers seem to be most prone to terminal injury - I
think they must use up all their energy reserves in growth, then don't
have anything left to start over, plus that lush rapidly growing foliage
is more susceptible to damage. On the other hand, something like NIGHT
GAME is a very slow grower here, but seems to be immune to my wacko
freeze cycles.
I'm so sorry to hear so many people had a Linda Mann winter/spring. If
you have had bad 'scorch' this year, please post of any TB cultivars you
grew that have performed exceptionally in spite of the weather. I am
especially interested in hearing about newer ones.
I will post some info about performance later. Things are still
opening. It's so interesting to see these long rows of cultivars next
to one another, where I fill in 'deaders' with new things in the older
rows - I counted 12 plants out of 80 with stalks in the most recent row,
and nearly all have stalks in the older rows. Mostly older cultivars,
lots of unknowns, 'mart plants, and pallida seedlings still
outperforming storeboughts.
Linda Mann east Tennessee USA zone 7/8
aka the Rot Queen - passing my title along to anyone who wants to claim
it.
