SPEC: imperfect blooms on I. cristata

Last year one of my Iris cristata blooms got a ribbon for best species
iris bloom. But this year the blooms don't look very good. They are
somewhat crinked and don't open out properly. I'm growning them in
a large planter. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be
wrong

   - not enough water?
   - too little fertilizer?
   - too much fertilizer? (I don't think so)
   - has the soil become too alkaline?
   - do they just need repotting?
