Dana,

If there is a stigma against late blooming iris, I think it is a function
of 1) climatic factors and 2) show, garden tour, and convention scheduling.

I tend to discount late blooming TBs because it seems that every year just
before or about the time they begin to bloom the weather very abruptly
turns much hotter. This means that the quality and duration of bloom is
adversely affected and late bloomers do not provide as much garden value as
those that bloom earlier.

Shows, garden tours, and conventions are scheduled with peak (midseason)
bloom in mind. The chosen dates don't always coincide with what is aimed
for, but to the extent that expectations are fulfilled it means that late
bloomers get much less exposure to the majority of the iris viewing public
than earlier bloomers and are therefore somewhat less likely to win awards
or appear on popularity polls.
