To answer Ellen first... it's "take my breath away" which means you
can't say anything :-) How about :-O :-) ?
It's Caillet, I believe.
Now for my pollen woes... It's hard to tell when an anther is
pre-opening, just opened, or post-opening. If the groove
that runs down the middle is wide open and the anther is
dried a bit, I take it that means that it's post-opening.
Any advice on how to distinguish the other stages?
I dismantled a canna this morning to try to figure out its
parts... daylilies, asiatic and Easter lilies, hibiscus...
no sweat. The canna seems to have an anther attached to
the side of one petal... and I went around checking them
and all seemed dried out. I opened one bud and found that
the anther (only seems to be one) was PERFECT -- fluffy,
with white grains coming off all over my fingers like face powder.
However, I couldn't readily identify the "female" part of the
flower; I suspect that unlike the flowers I mentioned above,
which have either pads or one tube-with-no-pollen that's the
female part, that it's like iris and either hidden between
flower parts as a little sticky spot. If anyone know,
please clue me in. One canna I have sets seeds like a champ,
and I'd like to cross it.
--Amy, where it is HOT and some irises are still performing;
had BRAGGADOCIO's flowers rot on me due to cultural factors;
BROADWAY JOE is in nearly full shade but looks good; EDNA'S
WISH, SPACE PIRATE in bloom, and a few other bloomstalks
still showing up, but likely to be fried out.
