Had I looked out in the front Louisiana beds on Saturday (for the Edmond
Show) I might have been surprised at what I found...
BAYOU SHORT STUFF (it was for a fact) was in full magnificent bloom with the
3 bottom flowers open (on Saturday). I would have had to pry a bit of the
leaf back to get the lowest one fully expanded and on view, but when I cut it
Saturday night the top terminal was beginning to bulge. As luck would have
it, by Sunday morning all 3 of the lower ones were toast, but the top flower
was stupendous. Obviously, good enough for a blue.
Having never shown but 1 Louisiana before in my life, I had no idea the spent
blooms were SO DIFFICULT to pop out of the sockets. I did okay with BSS, but
FREDDIE BOY had the top #2 position spent bloom that needed removing. I
coiuldn't get the lowest part out of the socket without bringing out the
sharpest mini knife and sawing gently to get it out completely. Without
removing it, it left way to prominent of a bulge to be exhibited. Must have
done okay on that too, cuz it also got a blue.
I like the short Louisianas myself. Being only 5 foot and 1/2 inch tall my
own self, I am one that needs to see and judge exhibition Louisianas staged
on the short bleacher type shelves. Once I got ATCHAFALAYA groomed on
Sunday, I never saw the flower again til the end of the show when I snatched
it in it's bottle and sat it on the floor so I could take a picture. And,
I'm sure I had already cut a good 6 inches of it off the bottom. The way our
irises in Oklahoma buckle to winds obviously ATCHAFALAYA is a strong plant
because it never even leaned in our mild 40 mph breezes that blew Saturday
and Sunday.
This is not only the best bearded bloom we've ever had here this year in
Oklahoma, but also turning into the best beardless bloom. I have a new pink
LA that opened yesterday and semi-weathered our pounding .21 inches of rain
in the wee hours this morning. Also a couple of spurias have reportedly
opened that I must go out to see tomorrow. Lately there has been so much
blooming so abundantly, so fast, that I tend to get reports from drive-by
spectators before I get out to see my bloom myself.
